Random Thoughts

Why is it that only real new Rock & Roll that I really like these days is Americana. It’s like we have went full circle and went back to the fifties and have converged back to Rockabilly. You know that stuff that made a legend out of SUN Records. When R&B merged with Country and created that mix of Rockin” Twang that ultimately became Rock & Roll. And let me make one thing clear, Nashville country pop is NOT Americana but popular music tinted country designed for the masses. True Americana is roots music with a whole lot of attitude. Steve Earle, The Band, Reckless Kelly, Willie Nelson,The Gourds, Lucinda Williams, Hayes Carll, they all are part of a modern day revival of musicians that are getting back to creating real music that resonates with their fans. Even Bruce Springsteen has taken the Americana plunge and embraced a more rootsy sound lately, there’s a whole new “dare I say country” element to his sound as of late. Well I better quit as my OLD 97’s record is coming to a close and I gotta flip it to the other side.

Nice post. Perhaps getting into Americana is an age thing. I saw Will Kimborough a year or so ago, then saw him backing Emmuloy Harris last August. Took the trouble to go and see Lucinda Williams in May. I love her brand of Louisiana country music.

I believe you are right. It is an age thing, however when I was at the Americana Music conference last fall it was amazing the the amount of twenty & thirtysomethings that were attending the conference and live shows.
